Google ads are an excellent tool that, when used effectively, can bring targeted leads to your website. Read on to learn more about what Google ads are exactly, and how they can bring your business more business.
What are Google Ads?
Google ads fall under the category of PPC (Pay-Per-Click) advertising. In the simplest terms, Google ads are advertisements that appear on the SERPs (search engine results pages) whenever you Google something. Their appearance varies, but generally you will see three or four ads at the top of the search page. These are paid search results, as opposed to the organic results that populate the rest of the page, meaning that people pay money for them to appear there.
They do so by creating ads and then bidding on certain keywords. By way of an example, let’s pretend I sell oil cans (if you’re just joining us, we actually do not sell oil cans), and I want to market my wares through Google ads. First I would create an ad – something like “Finest Oil Cans in the Midwest.” Then I would compile a list of keywords for which I want the ad to show in Google (“oil can” would definitely be one). Then I bid a certain amount of money so my ad will appear when someone searches for those terms.
Here’s where it gets tricky. Let’s say there is another company that sells my same product (oil cans) that is also using Google ads and targeting the same keywords as I am. If that company bids more than me, their ad will appear before mine. Now say you have 1000 companies selling the same product or service. This is where Google ads becomes much more complicated and nuanced. It’s a game of numbers and keywords that should only be played by a professional.
How to Effectively Implement Google Ads
Google ads are not the end-all marketing solution for your company. Rather, they are one of many cogs that can lead to a successful marketing strategy.
Many people think they can set and forget their Google ad campaigns – create your ad, set a daily limit, and let Google’s bots do the bidding for you. This is certainly an option, and there are many people who do this, but a set and forget strategy will not bring you the best possible ROI. To get the most out of your precious ad dollars you need to maintain your campaigns on a regular basis. That means logging into your account, checking to see how your ads are performing, tweaking keywords, monitoring your quality scores, and testing out different ad copy to make sure your ads are returning their best possible click-through and conversion rates.
